On Monday, December 9, one year after the inaugural SplinterCon in Montreal, the fourth SplinterCon event opened in Berlin.
Organized by eQualitie in partnership with the German Council on Foreign Relations (DGAP), this edition brought together over 150 participants to address pressing challenges in internet fragmentation, censorship, and digital sovereignty.
The Berlin conference highlighted critical topics, including:
- The Role of Big Tech in Digital Fragmentation: Examining how app stores and platform policies contribute to network fragmentation, with case studies on the Runet and global app censorship.
- Reaching Splintered Networks: Showcasing innovative tools, such as satellite technologies and resilient ecosystems, designed to bypass media firewalls and censorship.
- Resilient Technologies for Journalism: Presenting decentralized solutions for storage, visual evidence verification, and fact-checking in restrictive environments.
- Navigating Digital Sovereignty: Analyzing the transition from multistakeholder governance to state-driven policies and the impact on global internet governance.
- Infrastructures and Ideologies of Splinternets: Comparing the digital ecosystem approaches of China, Russia, and the EU.
Looking ahead, new SplinterCon events are on the horizon!
