About eQualitie:

eQualitie is a non-profit organization dedicated to advancing free speech, privacy, and secure communication through the development of open-source technologies. Our suite of products, including Deflect, Ceno, Ouisync, eQsat, and dComms, empower users worldwide to collaborate and communicate in challenging network environments. We are driven by a passion for open, decentralized, and democratic internet infrastructure.

Role Overview:

We are seeking an experienced Group Technical Product Manager to lead the technical strategy and product development for eQualitie’s “eQSuite,” a portfolio of four key projects: Ceno, Ouisync, eQsat, and dComms. The ideal candidate will have a strong technical background combined with product management expertise. They will work closely with developers, engineers, eQualitie’s leadership and technical stakeholders to ensure the successful delivery of highly scalable, secure, and interoperable tools. This role is a blend of technical leadership and product management, ensuring that technical architecture, design, and engineering considerations are central to the product lifecycle. We want our technologies to be innovative and pushing the boundaries imposed by network filtering and surveillance technologies.

Key Requirements:

Technical Expertise:

  • Background in Software Development or Engineering: You should have hands-on experience and deep understanding of coding practices, systems and network architectures, and technical problem-solving. You will not be expected to contribute code, however, you will be expected understand and review the work of developers, working alongside them to evaluate choices and guide technical decisions.
  • Experience with Open-Source Projects: Familiarity with open-source technologies and their ecosystems is key, particularly when it comes to collaboration, community engagement, and development methodologies.
  • Decentralized Communication Tools: A strong understanding of decentralized technologies (also web3), including peer-to-peer, mesh and anonymous relay networks, secure communication protocols, traffic obfuscation, protocols including Bittorrent, IPFS, Tor, and tunneling through TCP and UDP.
  • Embedded Security Practices: A understanding of and interest in secure software development practices, from design through deployment, is critical. You’ll ensure that security considerations, coding practices and documentation, threat modeling, and vulnerability assessments, are baked into the development process of project teams.

Product Management Skills:

  • Technical Product Roadmapping: You will lead creation and prioritization of technical roadmaps, balancing short-term deliverables with long-term architectural goals. Experience in leading the development of large-scale, multi-component systems is important.
  • System Scalability: Ensuring the product suite operates at scale, even under challenging conditions such as low bandwidth or in censorship-prone environments.
  • Technical Architecture Oversight: You must be able to evaluate and guide high-level architectural decisions, ensuring the design supports security, privacy, scalability, and interoperability across the suite of products (Ceno, Ouisync, eQsat, dComms). The products are not integrated, but there is a desire to leverage a “suite” approach to simplify development and improve end user experiences, as well as integrating our technologies with third-party communication tools such as Shadowsocks.

User-Centered Design for Complex Environments:

  • Adapting to Challenging User Environments: The products in this suite must perform under real-world conditions, including low connectivity and censorship environments. You should have experience or an interest in designing or managing tools intended for users in challenging digital spaces.
  • User Feedback Integration: Strong focus on gathering and integrating user feedback—particularly from vulnerable populations or those operating in high-risk environments—to ensure the tools remain usable and effective.

Key Technologies (optional, but preferred):

  • Languages and Frameworks: Familiarity with languages and frameworks commonly used in decentralized systems and secure communications, such as C, C++, Rust, Go, Python, Android / iOS / Windows SDKs.
  • Cloud Infrastructure and DevOps: Experience with self-managed cloud services, containerization (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes), and CI/CD pipelines to ensure smooth and scalable deployment processes.

Benefits:

  • Flexible, fully-remote working environment. Work where you want and (generally) when you want.
  • Opportunity to work on cutting-edge open-source technologies that make a global impact.
  • Professional development and networking opportunities within the digital rights community.
  • Great company culture and a fun retreat!
